RoundTable – WIRE ROPE DISCARD CRITERIA - Zurich 1989

Rope property/condition monitoring together with post test examinations have been of great value in obtaining an understanding of the fatigue behaviour of large diameter six-strand ropes which have been subjected to constant amplitude tension-tension fatigue. They have also been used as fatigue test assesment criteria in that the shape of the property/condition monitoring plots and wire break counts can be used to distinguish between ropes that achieved representative endurances and those which failed prematurely. A relationship is also demonstrated between load range, endurance and the point in life where stiffness and hysteresis first start to change.
