Procedures and Results of Electromagnetic Testing of Mine Hoist Ropes Using the LMA-TEST™ Instruments
RoundTable – WIRE ROPE DISCARD CRITERIA - Zurich 1989
Instrumentation generally used in the United States and Canada to test steel wire ropes provide two channels of information: percent change in metallic cross-sectional area, and localized flaws or defects. Unsuccessful attempts have been made to correlate loss of metallic crosssectional area to loss of axial strength. It appears that rope retirement criteria should consider rope degradation in terms of loss of metallic cross-sectional area rather than loss of axial strength. This paper will address the capabilities and limitations of this discipline and the involvement of ASTM in the development of consensus standards.
