Reliability of the number of wire breaks as discarding criterion for steel wire ropes running over sheaves

This paper summarises a thesis written by the author which assesses the reliability of the number of wire breaks as a discard criterion, in relation to the time remaining till rope failure. lt is concluded that there are some applications where operating conditions are such that probability of failure is too high. The effectiveness of magnetic testing is also considered.
