RoundTable – ENDURANCE RESEARCH OF WIRE ROPE AND ITS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS – Glasgow 1985

The paper reviews and summarises the authors' work on the properties of spiral strands, which has concentrated on the influence of interwire contact phenomena. Results are presented for strands up to 130mm diameter, and for a wide range of practical lay angles, covering:
(i) axial stiffness and hysteresis,
(ii) torsional stiffness and hysteresis of axially preloaded
strands, and
(iii) the bending behaviour of axially preloaded strands close to terminations, and in the free field.
