Assessment of steel rope strength based on non-destructive testing data

Magnetic Flux Detection is the main method of Non-Destructive Testing (NOT) of steel wire ropes. The Defectoscope (flux detector) estimates the magnetic flux along the tested rope length and measures the magnetic flux leakage due to the variation of the rope cross-sectional metallic area and local wire breaks. Evidently, close correlation must take place between the fixed lass of cross-sectional metallic area (LMA) and the endurance of degraded rope. To some extent one can use this correlation considering the measured LMA value as an input parameter of suitable mechanical model for strength estimation. The aim of present work is to interpret the NOT data in terms of structural mechanics and to analyze the factors, which affect the damaged rope endurance (residual strength) under both static and dynamic loading.
