In the work the effect of transformation of the construction of the steel ropes from the point contacts of wires (“conventional”, round) to ropes with the surface contacts between wires (“compacted” or deformed) on the different properties and parameters of ropes has been investigated. Four different constructions have been considered in the range of the work: 6 × 7 + A0, 7 × 7, S6 × 19 + A0 and S7 × 19. Beside the mechanical and technological properties of the wires, the values of total forces for rope rupture, coefficients of the rope effectiveness as well as their fatigue limits were also determined. New indicators of the quality of wires, strands and ropes have been proposed in the work. They were defined as ratios of tensile strength of wires to number of twists and bends. It has been proved that those new indicators allow for much easier and quicker estimation of the ropes’ quality and the selection of the highest quality ropes. It also has been found that values of these new indicators are higher for ropes and strands with the surface contacts of the wires (compacted) as compared with the ropes and strands with the conventional point contact of wires.
