Characterization and assessment of the dynamic loading of winding ropes

Modern shaft winding installations are to be regarded as transport systems subject to severe dynamic loading. Despite this, design and dimensions of their load-bearing components are largely based on the criteria of primarily static loading and only the maximum load imposed is explicitly taken into account. This approach is based on the assumption that the amplitude and frequency of the stress cycles which determine the degree of dynamic loading are covered by a factor of safety specified on the basis of experience. In so far as the characteristics of the installation in question lie within the limits of previous experience, this approach is satisfactory in practice and easy to apply.
