Summary

Non destructive testers are capable of indicating mechanical anomalies within wire ropes by mapping variations of the magnetic field in and around the test object subjected to saturating magnetisation. The base signals typically characterise Local Faults (LF) and Loss of Metallic Area (LMA). These indirect observations of the wire rope condition are further affected by specific design characteristics of various makes of NOT equipment. Interpretation of NDT results needs a high level of skills and much experience. Even at best, the results are subjective.
