RoundTable – ENDURANCE RESEARCH OF WIRE ROPE AND ITS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS – Glasgow 1985

One strand and six wire ropes were subjected to axial impact. The impact energy was high enough to cause failure of (12mm x 7 x 1), (13mm x 6 x 19) and (19mm x 6 x 19) rope construction. Loads at both ends and strains at several stations along the rope were recorded and analysed. Comparison with statically tested ropes indicated that dynamic loading can cause premature failure with associated progressive strand failure resulting in load shedding. Smaller ropes fail catastrophically at
much the same load as the static but with higher energy absorption.
