Fractographie Investigation of Breaks in Steel Wire Ropes

Fractographie examination of a fracture area in a wire rope can deliver important information which can be used for the selection of a corrective measure. Various macroscopic and microscopic fracture appearances and their mechanisms are described. Of particular interest is the correlation between the fracture features and the loading mode. Metallographie findings, which help to clarify the fracture mechanism, are described. The paper follows the steps which need to be performed during the fractographic analysis of a broken wire rope.
