Glasgow 1985 The influence of new manufacturing technologies and new calculation methods on the quality of steel wire ropes and technical limits in rope production
RoundTable – ENDURANCE RESEARCH OF WIRE ROPE AND ITS PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS –
Constantly growing requirements demand increasing rope qualities. Consequently modern suitable ropes must be of sophisticated design and must be manufactured to latest technologies available. The use of EDP-installations for rope designs and calculations additionally allows an optical adjustment of rope geometries with the result that even at the start of a production run wire sizes with unfavourable tolerances can be corrected. Modern features of roping machines like controlled strand tension, back turn etc. enable the manufacturer to produce ropes of constant and reproducible quality. A predictable rope diameter together with small variations in rope moduli under various stresses is utmost important. Improved rope constructions, creating favourable conditions of friction between wires and strands by cushioning yarns, have indicated that not the actual amount of breaking load but constructural details are responsible for the working life of ropes.
