ln a roller coaster at Euro-Disney a rope is used as a drive component in a catapult installation. To ensure the safety of this highly loaded rope drive, the rope is regularly checked electromagnetically. The conventional electromagnetic rope testing method with measuring coils offers limited detection of each broken wire. The Institute of Materials Handling of the University of Stuttgart has developed a measuring method to achieve improved recognition of broken wires. With a new high resolution measuring head the axial and radial magnetic components are registered simultaneously. The number of broken wires detected by this measuring method is compared with the results of the methods used so far (visual wire rope test and conventional magnetic wire rope test).
