Influence of the fatigue formulae on the endurance calculation of ropes by the new method based on cumulative damage.

During the OIPEEC Round Table in 1977 I have illustrated a new method for the evaluation of the ropes' endurance based on fatigue cumulative damage, that involves a new safety criterion. lt is well known that the ropes are tested statically and verified by the static safety factor related to the axial load, in spite of their dynamic stresses. The new criterion suggests to use a safety factor related to the endurance, calculated by means of Miner's hypothesis: it is also possible to keep in account the scatterings of the fatigue acceptance tests and of the load spectra by statistic considerations.
