Interpretation Limits of Gamma-Ray Examination of Locked Coil Wire Ropes

The Institute of Lightweight Structures and Ropeways of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich carries out full scale fatigue tests in order to examine the influence of several parameters on the fatigue behaviour of a locked coil rope bent over a roller chain. Due to the necessity of detecting the fatigue breaks and of tracing their accumulation during service life, Gamma-Ray examination has been applied. The paper reviews and summarizes the current investigations and discusses the reliability of Gamma-Ray examination in connection with the mechanism of wire breaks by means of the available results.
