Lubrication of wire rope

The requirement for effective lubrication of wire rope is discussed, and the relevant lubricant parameters described. The degredation of a lubricant in service is considered. A simple laboratory test method for wire rope lubricants is introduced and a comparative study of a range of commercial lubricants is presented. Correlation is made with wire rope testing and service worn ropes. The principle lubricant charachteristics important for effective control of friction and wear are identified, and conclusions drawn as to lubricant specification for optimum performance.
