The paper presents a method for determining the lay length of ropes in service. The method involves processing of the LF signal as recorded during magnetic rope examination to yield the lay length of rope and its strands, including the lay length of the internal strands of non-rotating ropes. Availability of this information improves reliability of magnetic examinations of ropes, and in particular that of multi-strand nonrotating ropes. Explanation of the method is followed by a case study that demonstrates its application.
