MRT inspection of wire ropes at the termination interface

Summary

Termination sockets for wire ropes are very important components in the respective structure such as bridges, masts, flare stacks etc., which transfers the load to and from the wire rope. Being exposed to the elements and subjected to extensive stress, NDT (non-destructive testing) inspection is an important part of their maintenance, particularly the section at the neck (interface) of the socket. Proven MRT (magnetic rope testing) techniques can be applied to quantitatively asses the condition of rope wires in targeted locations. Numerical simulation and laboratory experiments show that MRT can estimate the loss of metallic cross-section area due to corrosion or breakage of wires at the entrance of rope socket to a relative accuracy. The capabilities of this technique in the aspect of its sensitivity and influencing factors will be discussed in this paper. Keywords: magnetic rope testing, rope termination interface.
