ABSTRACT

Under variable tensile loads and cyclic bending, mining hoisting ropes elongate. Therefore, the Polish mining safety regulations impose the requirement to take records of the elongation diagram for every rope. ln practice, however, there are cases of non-typical behaviour of the ropes. Namely, after the defined operation time gap has passed, the ropes tend to contract. This phenomenon is not a result of temperature changes, but those of elasticity of the ropes and their wear. The examples of the contraction of coal-mine hoisting ropes as well as the results of investigations conducted in this field in the Central Mining Institute (Katowice, Poland) have been presented in the paper.
