Round Table The Application of Endurance Prediction for Wire Rope – Reading

Summary

The paper describes a numerical model for prediction of endurance of wire ropes. The variables of the model include: design; construction and strength characteristics of the rope; loads to which the rope is subjected; and the stochastic load distribution in rope wires. The buildup of fatigue damage in the rope wires is modelled based on Miner's hypothesis leading to determination of life of the individual wires. As the wires break their load is redistributed to the remaining wires, the process continuing till the rope rejection criterion is met. MATLAB' software has been used to implement the model. The model can be used for the prediction of endurance of individual ropes, comparison of endurance of various ropes operating in the same conditions or changes of endurance with changing conditions of service.
