Problems of safety of hoist balance ropes

Some cases of breaking of the shaft balance ropes took place in the Polish mining industry during the last few years. They entailes no casualties, only resulted in material losses, but made serious threat to the safety and work continuity of hoist equipment. The problems of safety attached to use of balance ropes, taking into account both work and catastrophic loads as well as corrosion weakening have been discussed in the paper. The results of measurements of mechanical properties of new rope wires as well as broken ones have been also presented. The analysis have been conducted on the basis of reliability theory.
