Report on Theme 1 : Endurance and new calculating methods
Before illustrating the papers concerning this theme, an historical glance at the evolution of studies on fatigue in general and on the fatigue of ropes in particular can be useful. As mentioned in Stuttgart Colloquium for the 150th Rope Anniversary, the problem of ruptures caused by fatigue on chains of coal mines determined, towards 1830, the starting of researches on the phenomenon of fatigue and gave origin to the wire rope as a mover that has better resistance to fatigue strains than the chains.
