Introduction

Many theoretical models dealing with the calculations of stress in wire ropes are verified in an indirect way with all the uncertainties that this entails with the aim of obtaining a method suitable for a wide range of applications, the Laboratory of Materials Handling of the Delft University of Technology therefore started the development of strain gauge measurements an wire ropes in 1968. Such measurements could be brought to an acceptable level of suitability for general use: Even with a large number of measuring points there is no need for severe concessions to be made in relation to the degree of accuracy. The level of stress deviation from previous measurements ( 1 ). ( 2) demanded statistical approaches Though the number of rope constructions that have been treated ln this way is still limited a number of striking observations can be made.
