RoundTable – HOW SAFE IS A ROPE? – Krakow 1981

 Introduction

In Polish coalmines approx.. 50 of all winding ropes are of triangular lay type. They have many advantages particularly useful for mining winders such as:

- 25 -- bigger tensile cross-section and tensile strength than those of a round lay rope of the same diameter·

- smoother and bigger contact surface in the rope pulley groove,

- bigger resistance to transverse pressures and abrasion of wires

Disadvantage of triangular lay rope consists in point contacts wires in the rope, rendering unsatisfactory durability under conditions of intensive operation.
