The wedge socket for overhead lifting*

This report summarizes some recent research into the wedge socket and provides guidelines for proper use of the attachment. It explains inherent limitations, notes common errors in installation, and clarifies the correct method of securing the attachment. Wedge sockets are popular in the field because they are easy to install and are used where end termination can be made only after the wire rope has been reeved and is in place. The connection is created by threading the wire rope into the Ioad end of the socket. looping it around the wedge, and then pulling the wire rope back up into the socket again (Figure 1 ). There are two different types of wedge socket. One type, used for overhead lifting, is easy to dismantle - a useful feature where frequent re-reeving of the hoist line is necessary. The second type, used for mining or drag services, is difficult to dislodge because of its deeper packet and socket length and is thus able to counteract repeated jarring during use.
