The calculation of material stresses in wire ropes has always been one of the goals to which much attention was paid, when carrying out research into steel wire ropes. In the beginning this must have been due to the need of preventing rupture of the relatively heavily loaded wire ropes. As material stresses increased rapidly, the reason for this continuing interest later on must be attributed to the view that the occurring fatigue phenomena are mainly controlled by the stress situation. The opinion, based on the practical side of modern use of wire rope, that the greater part of ropes has to be discarded too early because of wear and destruction, detracts nothing from the sense of research into material stresses. On the contrary, it emphasizes the importance of careful use of wire ropes in those cases where maintenance costs are justified because of the considerable price for replacement.
