During operation of wire ropes the wires suffer damages. The most frequent damages are wire breaks, corrosion. abrasion of both inner and outer wires. With the time of operation the number of defects increases and their weakening effect on the rope concentrate. To ensure safety of rope transport one has to know the values and the distribution of the defects. The best results in determining the defects of the rope offers the magnetic method of the static field /being developed in the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Krakow for 35 years/,which consists in a longitudinal magnetizing of a rope section 1 inside the magnetic detecting head 2. The defects in the rope give rise to alternations in the magnetic field distribution in the head which produce electrical signals in sensor 3.
