Martin Dohm of the Anglo American Corporation (AAC) of South Africa (SA) led a major research effort to assess capabilities of wire rope non-destructive test (NOT) equipment and of their operators. The last effort of this type and magnitude, that the authors are aware of, was undertaken on an international level in the late 1980's by the Canadian Federal Government's Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) in Co-operation with other governmental, academic, and industrial agencies. Nothing of comparable importance has, however, been attempted in the last decade. Martin Dohm’s paper under discussion (Dohm, 1999) offers an overview of the results achieved by this important AAC project. Some reflections upon this paper are offered hereunder.
