An insight into the mechanisms of interwire fretting in spiral strands
The paper reviews the theoretical and large scale experimental works of the present author and his associates as regards prediction of spiral strand axial and free bending fatigue life from first principles. Especial attention is devoted to the mechanisms of interwire/interlayer fretting fatigue operative between component helical wires. The question of determining the recovery length of the individual wires for any strand construction is also briefly discussed.
