BENDING of SHORT ROPE CLAMPS
ABSTRACT
A clamp which is attached to a rope produces surface pressure and hinders the relative movement between strands as well as between wires. Consequently, when the rope is bent stress concentrations develop in the wires in the neighbourhood of the clamps. Repeated bending of the rope produces fatigue breaks of these wires. If two clamps are attached to the rope with a short separation their effect is amplified. Investigations have been made to find out to what extent the interaction of the clamps depends on their separation on the rope.
