Considerations on the low temperature strength of wire ropes
Characterization of a wire-rope with regard to its behaviour is effected by tests complying with the Romanian specifications STAS 2172-74, providing either tensile testing to rupture of the rope specimen, or "wire-by-wire" testing, whence the ultimate strength of the rope is derived by addition. Along with a more extensive use of wire-ropes under low temperature conditions, a series of questions arose in recent years as to their reliability under like service conditions. Fatigue testing of the ropes on special machines adapted to low ambient temperatures ensured by very expensive refrigeration plants, are most conclusive in this respect.
