Discard Number of Wire Breaks for Stranded Ropes

The number of visible wire breaks is the most important discard criterion for wire ropes. The discard number of visible wire breaks ist given by ISO 4309, DIN 15 020 etc. These rules are, at least partly, not safe enough. In a big number of bend-over-sheave-tests the numbers of outside wire breaks were registered and evaluated statistically. On the base of this evaluation discard numbers of wire breaks will be recommended for the tested wire rope constructions. These discard numbers of wire breaks with a uniform safety level deviate in part enormously from those of the valid ISO 4309.
