Elastic Slip of Steel Wire Rope over Sheave

Elastic Slip of Steel Wire Rope over Sheave

The problem of rope slip has been analysed for cases where rope is passing over an idle sheave. This occurs when either tension or rope velocity, or both, are changing with time. Analysis is presented for the extent of slip in the contact regions where the rope runs onto the sheave, and where it runs off. Operational conditions for no slip, and slip over the full contact arc are given. The work done as a function of frictional slip is also derived.
