  1. INTRODUCTION

ln steel ropes used as tensile elements on hoisting Installations, elevators, cableways etc., the individual wires are liable to develop fatigue stresses and fractures under the influence of dynamic loading. with the result that the safety margin gets narrowed down. Further, environmental conditions may give rise to corrosion effects. All this causes the rope strength to deteriorate with time. Several methods of investigation are in use for determining the rope strength at a given moment. On the basis of the information so obtained the life of the rope can be calculated. The over dimensioning normally applied in the design of such installations is bound up partly with the degree of accuracy with which the indirect evaluation of the rope strength can be carried out under operational conditions.
