Endurance of wire ropes under fluctuating tension

ln OIPEEC Bulletin 84 Jean Paul Gourmelon (2002) presented a voluminous research programme about fatigue of stationary wire ropes. He thinks especially about the additional stresses found near to the anchorage by vibration and free bendings of the wire rope. ln this field, the most important aim of research is the evaluation of the rope endurance in the case of tension-tension tests without any additional stresses. The results of those tests from different researchers will be presented. It will be shown, in which cases the results - known until now - can be used in practical applications. Furthermore, the results presented show the status of what is known and what supplements in this field are necessary.
