In France, the main Non Destructive Testing (NDT) method for ropeway ropes is Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT). STRMTG, in collaboration with Cerema, carries out research in order to assess the sensitivity and bias of its different methods, and also follow the evolution of equipment used by MRT companies on ropeway ropes in France.

The aim is to reproduce MRT under controlled conditions. A first possibility is to use parts of discard ropes with real defects that have appeared during operation, carry out MRT by different companies, and perform an autopsy to link real defects to indications in the MRT signals. The second possibility is to manufacture a rope with artificial defects.

An example of this approach was used to evaluate the “half-coil” MRT method [1]. Rope sections resting on saddles were tested with this method in order not to move or lift them. This study compared this method with the performance of the standard method.
