A rope showing a certain loss of diameter must be discarded. Measuring the rope diameter is usually carried out by means of a portable measuring instrument. Lately measuring devices have been used which allow measuring the diameter of ropes while they are running. The following paper will deal with diameter measuring of running ropes using such a device. It will also look into the possibilities of evaluating these measurements and will discuss the automation of the recognition of the discard condition of the rope due to loss of diameter.
