Summary

Within the framework of the European harmonization of wire rope standards, it is intended to withdraw the standard DIN 15020-1 [N1], which is an established and reliable method for designing rope drives with its main components, ropes and sheaves. Rope drives now have to be proven by new methods implemented in EN 13001-3-2 [N5]. Also, the international standard ISO 16625 [11] will be changed in a similar manner. Designing rope drives with a sufficient service life of the rope in a certain application, possesses difficulties without a practical design procedure. In order to preserve the method of DIN 15020, the new German guideline VDI 5020 (draft will be published in June 2022) was developed in a working group of VDI (Association of German Engineers) and will be presented in this paper. It represents the further development of DIN 15020 and considers actual rope designs. Furthermore, it gives guidance for the usage of EN 13001-3-2 and includes standard values for bending cycles, based on the established Methods “Stuttgart” (Feyrer) [1] and “Leipzig” (TGL 34022) [3].
