On the bending stiffness of spiral multi-layer strands
This paper presents a theoretical model for spiral multi-layer strands under simultaneous tensile and bending loads. The proposed strand model takes into account the interlayer friction and the interlayer slip in the strand during bending and leads to a variable bending stiffness, i.e. a stiffness which changes with the strand deflection and the tensile load applied to the strand. The theoretical concept is validated by extensive tests using an innovative measurement device, the "cable-scanner", which detects by non-contact scanning of the strand surface, the deflection and the curvature of the strand axis.
