On the durability analysis of machinery components
In fatigue analysis it is useful, instead of considering the stresses, to determine directly the service life and compare it with its desired value, with the arbitrary safety factor excluded altogether. The desired service life is the one associated with minimum exploitation cost. Analys is of the minimum cost equation shows that the optimal service life depends on the engineering and economic parameters of the machine or structure of which the component in question is part, and on the conditions of the exploitation and control. In view of the flatness of cost curves near the minimum, high accuracy of the calculation is not essential. The presented example of a lift cable demonstrates the simplicity of the method in application and its suitability in all cases where the component is subjected to fatigue - inducing variable loading.
