Quasi-Elastic Bending of Steel Wire Rope
When a wire rope is bent, a resistance caused by inherent inner frictional forces acting between the wires manifests itself to a significant extent. Therefore, the steel rope should not be analysed as a purely elastic body. Previous solutions of the rope bending problem do not, and cannot, produce, within an elastic context, an analytical description of various bent shapes of tight and the slack strands, of the reverse bend formed on leaving a block or pulley, of energy dissipation in bending and other effects of internal friction. An analysis of the problem of a steel wire rope bending around a steel pulley, taking into account the elastic imperfections of the rope is presented below.
