Reference values for the evaluation of wire rope tests

As with all technical parameters, both nominal and actual values exist for the parameters which describe the essential properties of wire ropes. The actual values, as for example tensile strength, are distributed in a distinct form. Therefore, and because the nominal value is defined as a minimum, the actual values can differ a great deal from the nominal value. The OIPEEC Recommendations (OIPEEC 1988 and 1991 ), for reporting bending tests and fluctuating tensile tests, recommend reporting both the nominal and the actual values for the tests. The reason for this is that there are cases where reference values may be defined in terms of either the actual or the nominal values. This paper will show the magnitude of the difference between the actual and nominal values for the most important wire rope parameters. Furthermore there will be an investigation into when it is better to base the evaluation of tests on actual or on nominal values.
