The actual breaking force of steel wire ropes
The actual breaking force of steel wire ropes is considered to be one of the most important strength parameters. Designing and using winding gears, transportation and hoisting equipment etc., one often specifies the safety factors for steel wire ropes and other load-carrying components by reference
to the actual breaking force. Due to the composite construction of steel wire ropes the breaking force can be differently defined depending on the definition assumed as well as the method applied for its determination. The following paper deals with the different definitions and values of the breaking force. The results of the tests carried out at the Central Mining Institute on the actual breaking force of round strand ropes with linear contact between all wires have been presented.
