The Development of Rope

An extract from a recently completed PhD Thesis on Bending Tension Fatigue in Wire Rope (Reading University, July 1992). This paper gives a carefully referenced discussion of the development of rope technology from ancient times to the present day, starting from prehistoric vegetable fibre and finishing with ultra-high tensile strength rope for deep hoisting in the gold mines of South Africa.
