The FATIGUE ENDURANCE of WIRE ROPES for MOORING OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

ABSTRACT

This paper provides the results of two studies which were conducted to evaluate the fatigue performance of large diameter wire ropes for offshore mooring applications. The presented results are from:

108 constant amplitude tension-tension fatigue tests,

four variable amplitude block load tension-tension fatigue tests,

four constant amplitude tension-tension fatigue tests in ASTM seawater,

fifty-two bending-tension fatigue tests, and

three bending-tension fatigue tests under variable amplitude conditions.

The tests were carried out on six strand ropes, multi-strand ropes and spiral strand in diameters ranging from 38 -127 mm.
