The Influence of the position and number pf steel and plastic sheaves on the service life and lifetime of wire ropes: A Comparative Bending Fatigue Study

In modern rope technology, especially in reeving systems, there is a clear trend towards lightweight construction, which favours the use of plastic sheaves. Despite the attractive weight savings associated with plastic sheaves, the use of at least one steel sheave is usually necessary. This is because wire breaks on the rope surface are more likely to occur on steel sheaves, making it easier to detect the end of the rope's service life. However, the optimum position of this steel sheave in the sheave arrangement and whether a single steel sheave is sufficient remain largely unresolved. Furthermore, it is not always possible to ensure that a section of rope is moved through the entire reeving system.

The main objective of this study is therefore to gain insight into the effects of different sheave materials and their positioning on rope life and service life through a comprehensive bending fatigue investigation.
